    Moving contacts

    Hi everyone,

    When moving a contact from one account to another, all the history, notes etc follow the contact to the new account. But it seems there's no way to move the opportunities with the contact? In my case it's more relevant if the opportunities stay attached to the contacts rather than to the accounts.

    Is there a way to achieve that? Changing the Account ID of the Opportunity ons the server?

    Or if this technically "risky" what according to your experience is best practice in this situation?

    Hi Alex

    Yes, you can modify the script behind to make this change - however, this will only work if you are not using Sync at all. The reason you have to disassociate is because there is no mechanism to force the opportunity to the remote user. If you aren't using remotes you can pretty much do what you want - changing the contact to a new account and, additionally, the opportunity etc.

    That said, it depends also on how you manage an opp - there is a table called opportunity_contact that stores which contacts are related to an opportunity and doesn't need to know the accountid as it follows automatically. It's the account that is relevant to the opportunity, not the contact.

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for your advice, yes I'm using sync.

    In my case it's a bit confusing as most of the notes attached to a contact are related to the opportunities this contact has been involved in , so when moving the contact to the new account, the notes move with the contact, but they relate to an opportunity which isn't with the contact anymore.

    I have just moved a contact who had an opportunity attached, to a new account. As expected the opportunity has not moved with the contact.

    But when going back to the first account, the opportunity is not displayed anymore in the Opportunities tab?

    I can find the opportunity when I look it up, the name of the account is the original one, and the contact name is empty. It looks like the opportunity is now in the limbo of the system? Still attached to an account but not displayed anymore in this account's details?
